Herald Hunt --

In October, Dave joined Paul and Young Ron on their morning show at Big105.9 to kick off the auction of a donated Gibson guitar (many thanks, Gibson!) for Hurricane Katrina relief. The guitar will be signed by the members of the Rock Bottom Remainders attending the Miami Book Fair in November.

Many thanks to the buyer of the guitar, DUANE LINDSAY, for joining the Remainders on stage at the Book Fair. He wowed the crowd with Little Deuce Coupe and then, in a fit of generosity no doubt precipitated by the strange sounds coming out of the Remainders' instruments, gave up music forever and donated the guitar back to the relief effort.

Watch this spot for further developments.

Trivial Pursuit by Jeff Carrie, Professional Canadian

Every four years I marvel at the intricacies of the American political system. I don't claim to understand it, but it sure is neat to look at, sort of like a Jackson Pollock painting. In the days of the caveman one guy would stand up and grunt "THROG BASH SKULL WITH CLUB!" and everyone else would think, "You know what, let's just make him leader and not get our skull bashed in," and the political process ended and everyone went back to watching the NFL playoffs. Today, the political canvas has changed. Rather than one bold stroke, the race to the presidency consists of several individual strokes which at first glance appear to be haphazardly splashed across the canvas. But when you stand back and look at the whole picture you can begin to appreciate that it really looks like a bunch of crazed monkeys got loose in the art supply cabinet. If I speak metaphorically, it's because I really haven't the foggiest idea how the thing works anymore. It's like the rules of a board game that you find stashed at the back of the summer cabin every four years. Primaries, caucuses, super-delegates, super-Tuesday, get out of jail free, ok, perhaps some of these board games get their pieces mixed up, but in the end it all works out. Sure, sometimes Florida rolls the dice and one of them rolls off the table and lands partially on the carpet and it takes several weeks to decide whether it was a six or a two, but that's part of the fun. So in order to make sense of all this, I turn to one man, a man who is willing to guide us through the primaries and caucuses, a man willing to delve deep into the controversial issues (Donna Rice: Babe or not?), a man willing to raid the mini bar and put it all on the Herald's expense tab. Ladies and gentlemen, Dave Barry. (Coverage begins Friday, January 16th and continues through Tuesday, January 27th)

Herald Hunt Info

A GOOD THING YOU CAN DO THIS HOLIDAY SEASON: The USO has a program called Operation USO Care Package that sends packages to American service men and women who can't be home for the holidays because they're deployed in Operation Enduring Freedom, protecting us. Each package contains stuff that service people have said they want, such as prepaid phone cards, disposable cameras and toiletries. The USO is asking Americans to send gifts of $25 to underwrite this program; in return, volunteers will transcribe your greeting on a postcard to go with a package to one of our men or women in uniform. To make a donation, you can send a check made out to USO to OPERATION USO CARE PACKAGE., P.O. BOX 10835, ARLINGTON, VA 22210. You can also call 1-866-USO-GIVE. The Extravaganza of the Seas is a five-thousand-ton cash cow, a ship whose sole function is to carry unsuspecting gamblers three miles from the Florida coast, take their money, then bring them back, penniless and wanting more. One night, in the midst of a violent tropical storm, we find aboard the Extravaganza these lost (or simply misplaced) souls: Fay Benton, a single mom and a cocktail waitress desperate for something to go right for once; Johnny and the Contusions, a ship's band with so little talent they are...well, the ship's band; Arnold and Phil, two refugees from the Beaux Arts Senior Center; and an assortment of homicidal, heavily armed pug-uglies, all working for the fearsome Lou Tarant (a wide, bald man who has himself killed nine people--though none recently). Their job it is to carry out the ship's true business, which is money-laundering or drug-smuggling or...something really, REALLY bad.
So take this eclectic assortment of characters stuck at sea during a storm that would make any meteorologist wet his pants, and see how one ill-fated and ill-advised gambling trip will change their lives and send them ricocheting off each other like billiard balls.

Herald Hunt Info
Date:
Sunday, November 3, 2002
Location: Bayfront Park, Downtown Miami

The 2002 Herald Hunt is on! Join the lunatics at The Herald and plenty of similarly masochistic South Floridians as we turn the landscape into a huge conglomeration of puzzles, word games and brain-teasers. Itıs an exercise in mass frustration, and itıs all happening Sunday, November 3rd. Save the date, gather your team and get ready!

The 2002 Herald Hunt prizes will be announced soon so stay tuned. They promise to be so exciting, Dave Barry will drop hints to the teams that offer him a cut (alright, we are making this up!)

What the heck is The Hunt?
Letıs get one thing straight from the start: The Hunt is NOT a "scavenger hunt," okay? In a scavenger hunt, you find coasters advertising light beer, a key chain with a horseshoe and a four-leaf clover. At the Hunt, you find meaning in the bizarre, sense in the fantastic and answers to the great riddles of life. More likely, you get completely amazed and totally baffled. But you still have a great time, joining billions of your closest friends in a great outdoor adventure youıll remember for the rest of your life. Even after shock therapy.

The Hunt is a unique event, a communal celebration of South Florida. The last Hunt, in October 2001, turned downtown Hollywood and Young Circle Park into a vast amusement park, riddled with clues that led the winners to a fabulous Royal Caribbean cruise vacation!

The cost of admission? One Sunday Miami Herald. Anybody who buys a Sunday paper is eligible to win, which probably wonıt happen, and guaranteed five hours of insane fun, never, ever, to be repeated -- in this dimension.

The Cult of The Hunt
Over the years, the Hunt has attained virtual cult status. Hunters have been known to fly in from across the nation, and even from other countries. One local Hunt fanatic has developed his own website detailing past Hunts. Indeed, there exists a hard-core base of loyal Hunters in the South Florida community, and theyıre at it year after year, inspiring fellow participants and creating lots of "Hunt Buzz" along the way.

The Brains Behind The Hunt

Throughout the years, Dave Barry and Tom Shroder have shaped Hunt after Hunt into the amazing and wonderfully bizarre event that has gained fame across South Florida and the nation. And weıre excited to announce that this Dynamic Duo is back this year to confound the heck out of us once again. They spend months conjuring up clues so devious, only those with similarly twisted minds can figure them out.

Dave Barry is The Heraldıs award-winning, nationally syndicated humorist, as well as a best-selling author. Tom Shroder, formerly Executive Editor of The Heraldıs Sunday magazine, Tropic, is now both a renowned author and a senior editor at The Washington Post.

The Hunt Special Section
Avid Hunters buy The Bulldog, the early edition of The Herald available on Saturday afternoon, and pore over the all-important Hunt section until the games begin on Sunday morning. They scour every article and ad, going over the entire section with a fine-toothed comb, never knowing where a clue may lurk. Maybe, just maybe, theyıll uncover the missing piece of the puzzle that makes everything fit together. Then again, maybe theyıll just make themselves nuts.

Herald Hunt. Bring your family. Bring your friends. Bring a firm grip on reality!
